Screening of “Pride and Prejudice” followed by discussion on Jan 12-01-2011 by Department of English, Baba Farid College
Department of English, Baba Farid College screened movie, based on the novel Pride and Prejudice written by Jane Austen which has been prescribed by Punjabi University Patiala on 12th Jan, 2011 for the students of M.A 1st Eng (sem-2). The students made their opinions and discussed about several issues related to the movie and the novel. The students were excited to behold the moving characters of the novel. According to the students there were few such characters, Mrs. Hurtz, Mrs. and Mr. Philips and Mr. Denny who are not included in the movie but there was no obscurity in the movie even without these characters. The story smoothly moves without the excluded characters and scenes in the movie which might be considered superfluous by the director. The novel consists of elaborate description of characters and sceneries where as there were no such detailed description presented in the movie. The dominating character of the novel is Miss Elizabeth Bennet and similarly in the movie she is the crucial protagonist. The issue of marriage and class consciousness is represented both in the novel and the movie. The movie too revolves around the men and women relationships and the relation of Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth. The theme of marriage, Parenthood and class consciousness are vividly portrayed in the novel as well as in the movie. The students found the movie interesting and they participated in the discussion vehemently. They found it very useful.
